The Sydney Vaux Photograph Collection
Friday 20th October 2023, 7.30pm
at Seavington Millenium Hall :
You may have heard about the collection of photographs taken more than a century ago by the Seavington St Mary wheelwright and carpenter Sydney Vaux. Local photograph historian Phil Nichols gave a talk at the 'launch' last year, illustrated with many of the photographs taken by Sydney.
This talk is now to be repeated at Seavington Millennium Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 20th October 2023. It will be free, but donations would be welcomed towards the work of Somerset Archives & Local Studies.
Sydney Vaux (1879-1968) wasn't a professional photographer, but was a very keen amateur. He took nearly 700 photographs, mainly of the Seavingtons and other local villages (including Kingstone and Whitelackington), in the 1900s and 1910s. He photographed many scenes in Seavington and elsewhere, as well as annual highlights like the Friendly Society Club Day, harvest time and local weddings. There are some fabulous photographs of the 1911 Coronation celebrations and also photos from Sydney's time with the West Somerset Yeomanry.
